There is a rule of thumb for the root size of any tree. Measure the size of the canopy across from side to side and double it for the size of the roots from side to side. Hope that helps. The depth of the roots depends on the species of tree as some have roots that grow deeper in the ground than others but usually they are a six inches to a foot or more under the surface. Don't forget the tap root which usually goes pretty much straight down from the trunk.
