Sounds like a virus or a hard drive crash, that can be caused by a virus or just old age.
Get help from someone that you know has computer knowledge or try reinstalling the system but you may lose everything on it if you do that.

I am by no means literate in diagnosing computer problems but I did experience the same problem that you are describing. I had a virus on my computer. The screen was blank and no icons were visible. Did you notice problems with other icons popping up and preventing you from closing them before your screen completely went out? I did. My only option was to take it to the shop. It was a little over $100.00 to have the virus removed and the computer cleaned but the gentleman did upload the free adware virus for me. Make sure that you have more than adequate virus protection once you get going again.
