    my letters in microsoft word are black, but when i put a color background behind the word it prints with a white highlight around the letters. Why?

    Probably to highlight the number, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see it?
    So you put a color background but it doesn't print? It sounds like either your printer doesn't have color ink or it is set to print in black/greyscale only instead of in color.
