      Just don't put it on the roots, it will burn the roots out and the plant will die.

        When planting a plant that will be there longterm it is best to dig the hole bigger than nessasarry so that it is esier for it to establish roots and to give a couple of handfulls of BoneMeal or FishBlood and Bone which will give the plant the nutrients that it needs to establish a healthy root system,and don't forget to give it a good drink.
