I boil 4 parts of water and 1 part sugar to kill the bacteria.
Let it cool and then put in a clean feeder. I prefer keeping the feeder out of the hot sun.
If bees, wasp or any other insect gets in the food, I discard it and start again.
If the food hangs a long time it can get sour. The water will loose it's clear look and get a bit cloudy.

i just commented on this answer. i worry about humming bird feeders hung in hot spots. i'm afraid the little birds will sip and boil.
