    Is there any reason a person could not drive from USA to Panamas ?

      Yes, it would take way, way longer and you would be predispose to bandits and thieves. I flew to Costa Rica a few years back for $305 round trip. Look into air fairs. Taxis are very cheap when I was there, too. Also, there is a huge drug war happening right there now.
