You can't get much better than Safari.
Google Chrome is compatible with PC, Mac and Linux. There is is no problem of compatibility between Google Chrome with Mac OS X

You can download the version that is most compatible with your Mac os x here: http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/make/download.html?brand=CHKZ&platform=mac
All are AS LONG AS the Mac has an Intel based processor - as they have had for the past few years. Older ones with Motorola processors (like my Imac, 2nd generation), is not compatible with it.
Or at least that was the situation when I tried to download it... I would love to be proven wrong, or find out things have changed.
If I remember correctly, just try to download it - it will analyze your system and tell you if it will work.
