    Nope. It was after the October Revolution in 1917. This was when Lenin and the communists took power and created the Soviet Union (the USSR, or Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Before this, Russia was a Monarchy type system run by "Czars," who were essentially "Kings." This was a BIG change from their previous history, to say the least, and the rest is, as they say, "history."
    Nope, schiz, Elitistprick is correct. After WW1 Lenin, etc. formed the USSR. There were 16 republics in the USSR before the breakup in August 1992. I was there two months before the breakup.
    I believe Russia became the Soviet Union right after WW2, when the three major powers partitioned up the spoils of the war.
    I would say around 1947.
