    I got 1 in 1986. It was corrected by surgery. Many people (like me) get these from lifting using your back, instead of your legs. I didn't feel much when it happened but the next morning after I woke up I couldn't bend over!
    Excellent visual from the first answer, but it doesn't explain what caused the pain. The jelly doughnut is the disc that connects and cushions the individual bones of the vertebrate, and the part oozing out pushes on one or both of the big nerves running down the spine. That is what causes the pain, and yes, it hurts like hell.
    get a jelly donut , put your hand on it an press down till you see jelly oozing out,,,,thats what a herniated disk looks like,,,but disk hurts like hell an you can eat the donut,,,,lol
