    Orchestral Conductors?

I will admit to be a bit of a musical moron, but can somebody explain what a conductor does, apart from wave a stick around..

A conductor essentially keeps an ensemble in meter and organized
during a performance. When the wand is waved around he is
establishing tempo for the musicians and synchronizing them
dynamically while also leading the arrangement.
He/she also gives us his/her interpretation of how each composition should sound through use of pacing (tempo), dynamics, etc. You can hear the same work conducted by two or more people and each one will sound different from the next one.
