Normal levels of potassium in the blood for an average adult human range from 3.5 to 5.0 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L). Potassium is one of the electrolytes the body uses for normal functioning of the muscles, heart, nerves and kidneys. As potassium is used for maintaining normal heart rhythms, abnormal levels can cause potentially fatal problems with the heart. An average person's normal daily intake of potassium should be in a ratio of about 5 to 1 with sodium.
