The woods most commonly used to make guitars are basswood, ash, spruce, cedar, rosewood, mahogany, maple, walnut and ebony. Basswood, ash, spruce, cedar and mahogany are lightweight woods. Walnut, maple and rosewood are heavier and denser than other woods; rosewood is the oiliest and heaviest of the three. Ebony is a very heavy wood used mostly for fingerboards. Common combinations of woods for acoustic guitars include a spruce or cedar top with rosewood back and sides. Basswood and ash are common for electric guitars.
