It a module tha has a purpose, older ones inserted into ISA slots, then came PCI, then AGP for video. Easy to pop out and exchange for upgrading.. I don't keep up much with newer stuff, I quit building my own desktop computers when the prices went way down on factory built. I use a laptop now and i have no idea how to work on them..
