They should be. I have heard rumours that not all are, especialy the expensive ones made of oak rather than pine.
I am inclined to believe it because I know a jeweller who has been offered items by crematorium workers, usually wedding rings.
He refuses them but I expect there are many who will pay for gold if they can buy it cheaply.
This is an interesting and unusual question so I shall vote it up. Perhaps you will come back with more, or answers for us.

Glad to know that if I decided to be cremated, I should have my wedding rings taken off first.
For a greener planet maybe they should be recycled, like anything else these days. Daisies will be pushed up quicker without a coffin!!

I see no reason not to recycle coffins. I do think crematoriums should be honest about it.
