First of all, you have to create an account. Go to Skype's main page and follow the steps indicated. Once you have your account, you can start searching for contacts. Enter the names of friends, family members and colleagues in the search field and see whether they are signed up in Skype as well. If they are, you can send them a contact request. All the people that confirm your request will appear automatically in a list of contacts where you can also see who is online at the moment.

There are three ways of communicating through Skype: ordinary (written) chat, voice chat and cam chat. Any form of chat is free as long as you chat with people who are also signed up on skype.

You can also dial phone numbers of people and reach them on their landline or celphone. If you do so, you will be asked to pay a fee. Hence, for making such calls, you need to charge your account with money. Skype will ask you for your credit card details. The fee you pay on skype is lower than the one you would pay making the same phone calls from you phone.
