    why on my flat screen do some hd pictures not fill the screen

    its called leter box its the size of the original film width

    Some channels only in HIGH DEFINITION will cover the whole screen. (my TV)
    Others will not. Some older TV's have remote controls that let you adjust the size of the picture you prefer to watch. Refer to your owners manual and see how its done.
