Cardioversion is the delivery of an electric shock to the chest through electrodes or paddles. The shock is given to correct a dangerous heart rhythm or heartbeat.
A dangerous heart rhythm can be converted to a normal rhythm by medication as well. The electric shock is only used when medicines do not convert the abnormal rhythm, or when one's life hangs in the balance. In the hospital the patient is most often given a light general anesthetic so they feel no pain from the procedure.
