Not sure, I do know its another name for larvae, or a 'grub worm' i don't think it has any thing to do with bugs though.

When I think of 'Grub' in place of food, for some reason my thoughts go directly to the American wild west, when the Cowboy was king, I see them all sitting around the campfire eating their 'grub', which was mainly beans.

I did a short search for you, there's much discrepancy on the origin of the word.. But it was fun looking for it..

Could be baked beans looked like grubs. Australian aboriginees eat a grub found in trees a witchy grub.
