You need to de-friend them.

If you block someone on Facebook you can no longer be his friend on Facebook. Therefore you can't block him without him noticing it, unless he's feeds are from an application he is using. You definitely can block feeds from applications regardless to the friend that is using that application.

If it is an application feeds, then go to "Privacy settings" and go the the "block lists". Then select the application you want to block.
