Mean people usually have some underlying reason for the way they act.

They could have been emotionally or physically hurt - and being mean is a defense mechanism (If I'm mean they'll leave me alone)

Others use meanness to exercise power over others (If I'm mean enough, no one will question my decisions).

In some cases, it's just a learned behavior, usually learned thru another family member.

If you're having problems with a mean person, just walk away - they're not worth it. If you can't walk away, find someone who can help.

If all else fails, a swift kick in the ass has been known to change peoples attitudes.
