Developing this watch was not as easy as you might think. It is not enough to transfer all the characteristics of a successful model to a new, smaller design, as character cannot be simply link scaled down. Each element needs to be re-balanced to suit the reduced area.Once brought together, the elements give the watch a unique character.If you showed me this watch on paper, I'd be completely disinterested. However, after seeing this thing in person during a preview back in the fall, I have to say I'm impressed. Would I want one? Probably not. But the stone dial is really beautiful up close and I'm always a fan of a good 'ole Minerva movement. Just look at it – how can you not get into that?
8mm, it's not small, but these even wear well enough to fit my small wrist due to downward sloping lugs.The minute track consists of applied "pearl" markers, and the retrograde date hand is an open arrow tipped charcoal black, easily distinguished from the beveled hour and minute hands; reading the time and date is very straightforward and despite the inherent visual complexity of the date indication, the dial feels uncluttered and indeed, almost spare. This despite the fact that there are actually four different shapes for the hour markers, link plus the minute track plus the date indication.What resonates most with me about this watch is how much the late mid-century design language comes through. Zenith seamlessly brings back retro elements from the 1969 A386 into this utterly and completely modern watch.
To be honest I would the first version, in pink gold and with the black dial with off-white subdials as my second choice. These watches simply look stunning, and I feel there's nothing wrong with showing a link little pink (or yellow) gold these days. You don't always have to be under the radar.The day, the date and the month, which can be reset in bothOn the case back, you'll find the Alpina logo in bas relief and all the necessary information engraved around it.There are still some great bargains to find by looking through this era of Tudor watches.
