When the folks at Ochs und Junior reached out to tell me they had a new watch, I expected something interesting – but this really blew me away. Astronomical watches so often tend to be messy, over-the-top affairs. However, this gives you that same sense of cosmic connection without all the fuss. I still probably prefer something like the Ochs und Junior Annual link Calendar for personal wear, but overall this is a really cool watch that is unlike anything you're going to find anywhere else.Born of a time where a watch needed little more than three hands, today's Explorer can trace its roots back to 1953 with a ground-breaking expedition to the world's highest peak. These earliest Explorer models were provided by Rolex for testing on the expedition that saw Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay conquer Mt. Everest on May 29, 1953. The "Explorer" branding was registered in Geneva earlier that same year and the watches were prototyped specifically for this Summit bid.For me, the most desirable Tank LCs are those with Mark 1 dials and long Type 1 crowns. Mark 1 dials in particular are very rare and I think they deserve to command a premium over the later dials. I don't pay attention to the "Swiss" or "Paris" signature at 6 o'clock – one shouldn't demand a premium over the other.
