When should I replace or sharpen my rock drill bit?
Using a dull bit is false economy. It drastically reduces drilling speed, increases stress on the entire drill rig, and can even cause the bit to get stuck in the hole. You should pull your bit for inspection or replacement when you notice:
Decreased Penetration Rate: This is the most obvious sign. If you have to apply more downforce or it's taking noticeably longer to drill each foot, the bit is likely dull.
Increased Torque and Shaking: A dull bit doesn't break rock efficiently; it grinds it. This creates more friction, causing the drill to require more torque and the rig to shake or chatter excessively.
