How often should I change my pretreatment cartridges?
This depends on your feed water quality and consumption, but a general rule of thumb for labs is every 3 to 6 months. However, relying solely on a schedule can be risky. The best practice is to monitor the pressure drop across the filters. Most modern lab water systems have pressure gauges; when the pressure before the filter is significantly higher than after it, the cartridge is clogged and needs changing. For carbon filters, you can also test the chlorine levels after the filter. Letting them expire means chlorine breakthrough will occur, which can rapidly destroy an expensive RO membrane. Always replace them proactively rather than reactively.
