Before we look at our last strap for the year let’s look back a little bit on what has been one of the most successful series on Fratello Watches, besides Speedy Tuesday and TBT.With my own watch collection, I could easily be described as an accumulator.Each of the dials on the new STO models are inspired by glaciers, with link a vertical ice-inflected texture rendered in three different shades of white or blue. The Seiko SPB297 (pictured above) builds on the 62MAS skin-diver design language from 1965, while the SPB299 (below) is a new take on the aesthetic codes established by the original 1968 Automatic Diver 300m Hi-Beat ref. 6159-7001.The watch has 30m of water resistance (deeper than I'd take an Etanche a Double Boitier, to be fair) and part of that is probably due to Naoya Hida's first-ever display caseback. This is where things unfortunately is a question mark for me.
Another technical modification characterizes this timepiece: its 01.12-C caliber! This selfwinding movement beats at a high frequency of 57,600 vibrations an hour and delivers a power reserve of 60 hours. Just like all the link brand’s watches, chronometric precision takes centerstage. And, thanks to all its performances, this piece has been granted COSC certification.However, the blue print of this watch is with the triangle at the short-end of the chronograph second hand and that's what most people use as a guide line.This bezel is bidirectional without any clicks and provides the bonus of an elapsed-time marker.
But, as RJ also tried to explain, it might simply be that watches with a date window sell better than ones without it.Speaking of hands and stuff, just look at the firm and stout hands link on this watch.This idea struck me as unwise for lots of reasons. In those days I was editor of a watch trade magazine called American Time. I also wrote a watch column for each issue of a sister publication, National Jeweler, a jewelry industry news tabloid.
