Here at HODINKEE we love a good vintage Rolex Datejust. It might be the most universally loved watch of all time, and it's the kind of watch that you can wear in basically any situation. So, we've partnered up with our friends at Gilt to launch a capsule sale focused solely on the iconic model in all its varied incarnations – and that sale begins tonight.The formulation of this idea was brewing over the last decade. But I would nail it down by saying that this exhibition was really percolating in the mind in the last couple of years. When COVID hit, it was a real push to put this into play. I think it was necessary for us to explore different platforms. We have the platform of bricks and mortar, which we are very accustomed to, and yet we wanted to take advantage of what technology could do in this situation.The story goes like this. Shortly after the 1972 Basel fair, the owner of an Italian retailer for Audemars Piguet received the A2 as stock and gifted it to his new brother-in-law as a wedding present. The Italian watch market was one of the largest for the Swiss watch industry throughout the 1970s, so it's reasonable to assume that Italian dealers would have received immediate access to Audemars Piguet's new watch.This Japan-only brand has been hard to miss on watch social media over the past year or so. Ōtsuka Lōtec has a unique aesthetic (and distribution strategy) that, it seems, works for the masses. And I mean really works. So much so that this exact model was awarded the "Challenge" award at the 2024 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
Girard-Perregaux adopted quartz movements as early as 1971 and became the first historic Swiss house to serially produce quartz watches. Then, as LED displays gained popularity, the two concepts were link married. The brand first to bring them together was Hamilton with its Pulsar in 1972, which had a slightly more conventional upward-facing LED display.These models have been redefining the manufacture’s sporty elegance since last year. The variations on show this time round are totally in tune with the trends of the times. It's nice to see the Siffert on its original Gay Frères bracelet, completing the look. These look great on the bracelets and on straps, like the "Pre Viceroy'' with the contrast stitching versace homme montre playing into the racing history.Back in 2020, Doxa CEO Jan Edocs decided he would set the record straight, once and for all. He put together a team to get to the bottom of the Doxa Army mystery. He had all of Doxa's records at his disposal, but that was only half the battle. He would need access to the Swiss government's records and first-hand accounts of issued Doxas being used in the early '70s. That's where Hilty came in.
