Rolex and Wilsdorf worked closely with manufacturer Aegler to improve early automatic winding movements. Eventually, multiple patents were granted to protect the winding of a wristwatch by an oscillating rotor. This is why no link other manufacturers produced full-rotor automatic link movements at scale until the 1950s – but there's Ben's article about the Patek 2526 link for that story.
