My doctor had me join a YMCA and told me to start swimming. After I rested my back and gave it time to heal I did just that.
Swimming moves all your body parts in an unrestricted way that strengthens all the areas around your back. I occasionally OVER DO IT and get some back pain but never like it was during my worst pain where I couldn't walk or stand up straight.
Try it out. If not, surgery might be the answer but I don't recommend it.
Good luck
