Not only are pocket watches much cheaper – a solid gold Lange link from the turn of the 19th/20th century will go for about US$5-10,000 – it’s also relatively easier to determine the provenance of what you’re buying. The second watch in the collection is the BR-X1 Skeleton Chronograph. This model has the same 45mm square case, this time made of rosewood, bronze, and titanium. The openworked dial reveals the automatic caliber BR-CAL.313 movement, which is a tad less complicated than what's found in the watch above. This is a simple two-register chronograph with the date at 6 o'clock. This watch is limited to 99 pieces and retails for $25,800.Jaquet Droz has a history of making some very beautiful complications. It can and does make highly complicated watches that are way over on the baroque side of the design spectrum, like the Charming Bird automaton watch, which has a tiny bird that flits under the dial while chirping a song; it also has a history going right back to the founding of the modern brand, of making some of the finest and most interesting enamel dial, high-art watches in the business.
It was in the seat pocket of several airplanes during intercontinental flights.Well, it's really interesting because Stranger Things season one was set in 1981. When I began pre-production, everybody was saying, 'Oh, well it would have been this, or it would have been a Swatch, or it would have been digital.' Actually, those things didn't come into existence until a couple of years later. There was a still a bit of a 1970s hangover in 1981. (Reiss is right; Swatch was test-marketed in Texas in the link fall of 1982 and did not debut commercially until 1983.)And it looks like A. Lange & Sohne has finally begun to shed its reputation as soft at auction with numerous strong lots at Phillips. A 20-piece Lange 1 in Honey Gold from 2016 sold for CHF 189,000 – a price I bet will be seen as a steal in a few years – while a 30-piece limited edition 1815 Tourbillon from the company's Handwerkskunst series reached a stunning CHF 630,000.My hope is that British Watchmakers' Day will become an annual event as we try to raise awareness of our sector around the world, says Smith. "I wanted to make clear just how much this event means to me and that's why I've committed to build one of my own watches especially for the event."
Not only is the word appropriate – over 6,000 mph when bolted to link the Saturn V!! – but the script itself reminds me of that found on the US Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team motif. And those twisted lugs seem to complement the jet fighter planes of the time that still had some real beauty. For me, the total design harkens back to a time of test pilots, risk, and guys like Chuck Yeager. The MeisterSinger Lunascope is an automatic watch with moonphase indicator, and retails for just below €3000. The Lunascope combines the well, although I don't like over-using the word too much, an iconic design with one of the most visually attractive complications, the moonphase indicator. The waves on the dial look a bit farfetched, and I think the polished and domed hands lack character. In the past few years, we've seen quite a few watches that aim to translate strong design languages from high-end watchmakers into models that are an order of magnitude more affordable than their inspirations. Just earlier this month, the Gronefeld brothers presented that concept with their own line of watches, and the MB&F-descendent M.A.D.Editions has certainly been the center of conversation for a few years now. Hell, I'd argue that even the MoonSwatch fits into this idea.

Started at the age of 15, this was Daniela Dufour's "school watch." Working in her father's workshop on the link weekends while attending watchmaking school at Ecole Technique de la Vallee de Joux, Daniela finished this watch back in 2021 at the young age link of 20, just before her graduation. It's a beautiful rose gold case with the quintessential Dufour black dial, 3, 9, and 12 Arabic numerals and central guilloche link with a sunk sub-seconds dial. But it's the movement where she put her mark.
