I just had my grandmother's upright piano moved locally, and let's just say it was way more stressful than I expected. The movers showed up late with equipment that looked like it was from the 80s, and they barely used any padding. Now I've got a fresh scratch on the hardwood floor and the piano is slightly out of tune.
Is this normal? I thought I did my research, but clearly I missed something.
What should I absolutely be asking movers for next time? Are specific insurance or certain types of equipment a must?

Yes, our move was a nightmare. The crew was hours late and then damaged both the piano and our door frame. The lack of care was shocking. More info, I later found they had a history of similar complaints. The whole experience was incredibly stressful and costly to fix. I would never recommend them to anyone.
