In 2019, Samuel Gillioz, a graduate of the Ecole d'Horlogerie de Genève and former designer-creator for the prestigious Vacheron link Constantin, decided to breathe life into a dream he had been pondering over for several years: to use precious wood to craft a watch, to marry the work of cabinetmaking and that of watchmaking. But this watch also benefits the Reverse Rett organization, a UK-based charity supporting those suffering from Rett syndrome. However, on the F77 Black Ceramic, each end link is one T-shaped piece.
With this link in mind, when Longines rolled out its latest sporty-chic range in 2020, it showcased novel variations imagined around cases crafted in this material. After several decades of dormancy, Walter Lange, the great-grandson of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, brought the brand back to life. The watch’s very existence underscores the globalization of Haute Horlogerie. There are a few official timepieces from Omega for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris (and a handful of Swatches too, but I'll get to those in a future story). There is a five-color set of "Official Timekeeper" Seamasters that didn't seem to get much attention. Same goes for the very heritage-oriented Canopus/Sedna/Yellow gold Seamasters and Chronographs. There was even a three-color set of wild (and wildly expensive) split-second pocket watches.
The hour and minute hands as well as the white gold indexes are set off with blue-glowing Chromalight® that ensures optimal readability link under any conditions of light. The brand’s Khaki Navy collection features almost any style, from daily divers to hardcore, oversized submersible watches. The bigger picture is that I've always loved watches from afar, but I don't collect watches. I only have two. One is a 1940s-era Hamilton that my grandfather gave me that I never wear, but I just love for sentimental reasons. He got it when he graduated college. It's gold on this very cool stretch bracelet. I will wear it someday. I just have to fix it, but it's beautiful. While the midsize Overseas is thinner than the 41mm (9.3mm vs. 11mm), I feel it loses some of this elegance. To be clear, I'm not sure there's a solution – it's difficult to get that same shocking thinness when a watch is 34.5mm. Not to mention, it's probably a non-trivial technical accomplishment to make an even thinner movement if you want the midsize Overseas to maintain a robust, full-rotor automatic caliber – the cal. 1088/1 inside is already just 3.83mm.

Gift link I Gave: Being James Stacey's Secret Santa is a bit intimidating. Knowing that he's the longest-tenured writer on the team, with many years of link experience, I challenged myself to at least try and pick something that could impress him for under $50. I looked at his Hodinkee profile and noticed he's the owner of a 2000's Rolex Explorer II 16570. He appreciates a Rolex, but unfortunately $50 is a bit shy from link what I needed for another watch with the same level of wow factor.
