Tavernier and his screenwriters deviated from the novel in a few different ways (setting the film in Lyon, his hometown, instead of New York) and could’ve easily made Noiret link a cobbler or a village doctor. In the film, watches and link clocks don’t move the plot forward. They are not smoking guns. So what is it about a clockmaker that Tavernier saw as integral to link his character?
