Part 1 A Concise History Of The Quartz Revolution

One evening, while I link was at the Watches And Wonders show in Geneva, I saw that one of the guys from the get-together was offering his Rolex Day-Date on his Instagram stories. This one, by the way, came on a funky Japanese rubber Bambi strap, but I’ve switched it out for a 20mm Tropic.Reversing this trajectory and taking you back into hard-core-norm-core felt like the obvious next step. The original Portofino, reference 5251, was a very large watch due to its movement. It was powered by a pocket watch movement, which IWC turned 90 degrees and equipped with a moonphase display. You could call it a wristwatch, and officially it was, but only because the movement was placed inside a case with lugs and a leather strap, which meant it could be worn on the wrist. In character (and size) it was very much a 19th-century pocket watch.
The Leica Q3 (28mm, though a 43mm version also appeared on the market) has been a trustworthy companion on my trips to watch brands, but it also enables me to take wrist shots from up close in its macro mode when I am home or in the office. They are particularly special for no reason other than in most cases they were produced in link relatively small numbers so they are desired among watch collectors. The two parties are producing a limited run of only five LVKV-02 GMR 6 watches, and they invited watch media to cover this special introduction. This reference is therefore also dubbed "Ed White" and has become quite a collector's piece over the years.
During Watches and Wonders, the Geneva-based manufacture showcased a masterpiece link of its know-how with a sophisticated watch designed for highly-demanding, savvy collectors. This was a big one, people. In September we announced the very first issue of the very first HODINKEE magazine, a project that was – no joke – five years in the making. What do you do when you hear about a strange group of possibly unique Patek Philippe perpetual calendars that are selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more)? You investigate the hell out of them and try to get to the bottom of the story, for betteMorgan King might not be a household name, but if you're a regular HODINKEE reader he's every bit as legendary, exciting, and inspiring as any professional athlete or award-winning musician. In this episode, Morgan shares his incredible collection and passion for vintage watches, as well as his thoughts about "Pimp Time."Read the full story here.Witnessed at a dinner with James Cameron after his expedition to the bottom of the ocean, these watches are the actual pieces that visited that depth from the outside of the submarine. First the Deep Sea Special with the Bathyscaphe Trieste on January 23rd, 1960, and again with Cameron and his Deepsea Challenger submarine on March 26, 2012. Both traveled, without additional protection, to an astonishing depth of over 35,000 ft. Dive (a bit) deeper here.
