What exactly defines a "mid-range" scope?

A mid-range scope is typically defined by its magnification range, which bridges the gap between close-quarters and long-range precision optics. While there's some flexibility, a common sweet spot is a variable power scope with a low end of 1-6x and a high end of 4-16x. The most iconic and popular example is the 3-9x40, which has been the standard hunting scope for decades.

The key characteristic is versatility. On its lowest setting (e.g., 3x or even 1x on a LPVO), it allows for fast, both-eyes-open shooting at close ranges. On its highest setting (e.g., 9x or 12x), it provides enough magnification to clearly identify targets and make precise shots at several hundred yards. This "jack-of-all-trades" capability makes it the perfect choice for hunters in mixed terrain and shooters who want one optic for multiple applications.
