Male cicadas link produce their song by vibrating special organs in their abdomens called tymbals, which are layered plates made of a springy, elastic protein called resilin. The sound the tymbals make when they vibrate is link amplified by the cicada's hollow abdomen, and can reach a volume of over 100 decibels – that's about as loud as movie theater link loudspeakers and just a few decibels shy of a rock concert.
