During this year's BaselWorld fair, we sat down with Seiko and discussed the new Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT diver watches. Prospex, which stands for Professional Specifications, is just that: Watches with professional specifications that meet the demanding requirements for divers and pilots.For everyday use, there was the Datejust, for the weekends, the "Sub," and for special occasions, something a replika Longines bit more formal like a Cellini — or now a Perpetual 1908.In contrast to competitors, such as Rolex, the brand shares how it works and the stages a watch and its constituent parts go through.As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing ugly to be found, so I'll just dive right in with a handful of "good.Omega advises a six-to-eight-year interval, while Lange recommends five to seven years.That date, and the rest of the functions, are all supported by a brand new movement, the Seiko 6R54. This automatic movement offers not only an impressive 72-hour power reserve, but also one of the SPB38X's core features, an independent 24-hour GMT function. Sometimes called a "callerBirthday-related narcissism aside, I am very excited to see one of these new dive-GMTs in the metal as it feels like the sort of watch folks have been asking Seiko to make for quite some time. Expect more as soon as I can get my hands on one.
