TAG Heuer’s watch sits in a very different prize segment though, and quintessentially TAG Heuer through and through (notice fake omega speedmaster watches I said TAG Heuer and not just Heuer).The case-to-dial ratio is significantly skewed towards case, with massive lugs to incorporate the bezel locking mechanism. Cases of this era tend to be thicker to compensate for the lack of water-resistant technology that's available today. In the metal, the commando prototype's case is reminiscent of other monobloc-cased locking-bezel divers of the era like the Omega Ploprof. This watch is the predecessor to the much-loved Carrera which appeared about two decades later. It is a lovely vintage chronograph in itself, very much in line with the general aesthetic of chronographs from the 1940s. But it's representative of where you'll end up if you ever go deep down the rabbit hole of Carrera history. Not to say that this should not be your replica audemars piguet watches first vintage Heuer chronograph, but it's one I think you would appreciate even more if you are aware of the model's lineage.Is this that watch? I don't know, but it definitely ticks the necessary boxes. Vintage charm, faux-patina, depth to the dial markers, matte textures, and it's a steel sports watch. Except for that Furlan Marri I mentioned, there's not a ton of competition. A few months back, I reviewed the Tissor PR 516, a decent chronograph for under $2,000 but decidedly less wearable than the Atwood. The specs and price alone make for a compelling watch, and that's before you even get to the brand's story.While many of the new Royal Oak's design cues connect to the pocket watch, there is an inherent link between this novelty and the 1980s-era platinum 25636PT, if only because that was also a skeleton Royal Oak perpetual calendar with blue rings and typefaces of the same era. I seldom advocate for diamonds on a watch, but perhaps embracing those hour markers from the pocket watch would have strengthened the connection.
