For his own piece, Voutilainen dialed back the sportiness of the case by using tantalum and not just a link 3/6/9/12 dial like found on his 28SC model but the link 28SC central seconds movement and no luminous hands. "The link dial is just sportier," he told me. Tantalum, meanwhile, is very hard, durable, corrosion resistant, and has a beautiful lustrous blue-grey sheen but is also notoriously hard to machine. Nevertheless, it was the right metal for Voutilainen.

There are link a number of watches which are specifically designed for land navigation using this method. The Seiko Alpinist may be the best known but other examples link include the link Prospex SRPD33K1 the Montblanc 1858 automatic chronograph and the Breitling Hercules.
