    hwatchingnewsonline has taken over as my "preferred" search engine when I open new tab.

    Suddenly changed and when I set google as preferred search engine in chrome settings, this does not override.

      Try a "system restore" on whatever device you are using (that info would have been helpful). You probably downloaded something that added this to your device.
