We went on a  week- long cruise in the 90s when there was no WI FI , no cell phones, no texts or email, and we never had a problem.

You will not be able to text each other on the ship unless you both have wifi. I would recommend you both subscribe to Facebook's Messenger so that whenever you are in a port where you have wifi, you will be able to call each other without charge. Facebook's Messenger would allow texting, calling, and/or video messaging  whenever you both are online.
