This question was on here way early in the history of akaqa..........about 6 years ago. I don't remember the answer, but I would agree with P.L. - - - to make it stretch farther ? 

     Or, maybe it's so the customer won't say, " Waiter, what is this fly doing in my soup " ?   Ha ha 

     Or maybe to make the customer think it's round noodle  soup or spaghetti Os   :-) 

They put some in the soup at our local Chinese restaurant, they say it make it taste wheely  wuberwey
