What can I do to informally resolve the situation ?

Yesterday, I was pulled over by a campus police officer for not having a rear license plate.  I explained that the plate had been stolen about a month ago, and I'd reported the theft to the police and taken the front plate to the DMV, turned it in and gotten new plates and a sticker for the rear plate.  The plates were not ON the vehicle because I was afraid they would get stolen again because I am usually in the same places, so feel I'm an easy target.  The plates were in the boot/trunk, which the officer did not want me to get out of my car to show him.  After confirming my wild tale of truth, he told me to have a nice day.
