I don't think you can get a vaccination. People can get them if they had the chicken pox growing up. I will definitely have to look this up, but I am pretty sure my physiology professor said that shingles isn't something you can get vaccinated for.

I know a woman who is fighting with shingles right now. She showed me her stomach and side. Brutal. I can see that this disease is wearing her down. I have not been vaccinated but then, I don't get the flu shot either.

    Yes.

If you've had chicken pox, definitely talk to a physician and weigh the risk vs. the benefit. I had the pox when I was 9, and decades later my eye was red and irritated. I went to an opthalmologist for a subsequent exam and he called in a retinologist. They whispered "hospital". I was petrified. Turned out the virus surfaced after all of those years, and I was admitted right away put on I.V. and my infection began to clear up right way. I had an H.M.O. at the time, and they wanted me out of the hospital the same day I was admitted, saying I could be medicated at home. I went home, had the supplies delivered (the medicine on ice), I set up the drips myself, and a nurse had to come in every 3 days to change the line. Eventually, I had to have laser surgery, and the doctor said I'd have an 85% chance of losing my sight. The surgery was successful, however. This was an extreme case.

Glad you are ok! This disease can do that to a person so I hope all who have had chickenpox think about the vaccine!

Thanks, clu. Even that episode doesn't guarantee that I'll never have another flare-up. I took a shot years ago just as a precaution.

Nope,i have never had chicken pox,,so i should not get shingles i guess,,>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

My mom had them BAD and they were essentially what killed her. Took the fight right out of her. I asked my pharmacist about them and she said if I hadn't had them already then I wouldn't. But my sister had them a few months back and we'll.... I'll get the shot when I'm older.....

You can get a shingles vaccination here in the UIK when you are 70 not before apparently.

I had shingles about 20 years ago, the doctor told me it comes from the chicken pox virus which lays dormant in your system , and then comes out again at a later date. It's very painful.

    Shot last year.

I haven't been vaccinated for Shingles but I had Chicken Pox twice when I was a kid even though most people swear we can only have Chicken Pox one time. My first husband had Shingles all over his sides and he was miserable. I don't know if he had Chicken Pox when he was a child.
