Is it truly bad for one to leave their phone charging beyond 100%?

I plug my phone in before I go to bed and wake up with it charged. But I've heard this is bad for the battery. True?

My phone used to post a message to unplug my charger because the phone was fully charged.  At 14 months, the charging mechanism in my VERY EXPENSIVE phone gave out.  The battery was fine and the chargers were fine; the phone would not accept the charge.

Had to get a new phone.  Plug it in at night. Unplug it in the morning.  Don't plug it in unless it goes below 80% during the day, which is seldom does, unless I'm playing a game, aka-ing, or waiting on hold for an interminable length of time for "customer service".

Why doesn’t it come with these instructions? I guess I could have “googled” these information. Easier to ask you guys……….
