I cannot find any reference to substantiate your answer with regards to being 'still in use in the UK'. Could you tell me your source please?

Note: Middle temperature error link was link observed empirically before explanations for it were proposed; the one in link the article is a simplification of Charles Guillaume's proposal. An extremely detailed paper on the subject was published in the Horological Science Newsletter, which I ran across thanks to a very thorough analysis of temperature effects on watches, by David Boettcher.
