The first written records of dice are found in the ancient Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata, composed in India more than 2,000 years ago. Pyramidal dice (with four sides) are as old as cubical ones; such dice were found with the so-called Royal Game of Ur, one of the oldest complete board games ever discovered, dating back to Sumer in the 3rd millennium bce.

Interesting question!  I would think Backgammon is pretty old, requiring dice and playing pieces....will look into that.

One of the oldest board games in history, dating back to 2600 BCE in Persian Empire/Mesopotamia.  Belongs in the tables family of board games, oldest in history.

The original dice games were played 50,000 years ago in western Tasmania, the dice originally were round so they would roll easier playing craps at night by the open fire. the dice used were roo eyes, later they used cube dice made from the hind leg bone of a roo to stop the dice from rolling on slopy ground, this info i aquired from an inmate in a mental institution, he promised me it is genuine fact. :)
