Hector, please, the Pope didn't say 'Hit your child is ok'.  Hit is a very strong word, he did say that spanking is ok.  But c'mon, lets understand the difference between disciplining with a spanking and hitting your child into submission.  There is a difference!

I have never 'hit' my child when he was little and doing wrong but I did spank him.  he remembered it too.  Grown up, 36 years old and we are the best of buddies.    I get very aggravated when people that have no child rearing experience begin advising others that do how to raise their children.  we have a lot of that here in CA-USA.  Thaks you Dr. Spock who's grandkid jumped off a building and committed suicide.  (pope included-I don't need him telling me how to raise my kids)

Yes you are right he did say smack Vinny, only my Mother youse to chatise us 4boys and 2 girls,
    Vinny

Actually I heard it as 'spank'. Maybe this is an American slang but to me, hit sounds torturous. and 'smack' is really messed up as it is a German word meaning schmatzen ‘eat or kiss noisily.’ We use it that way too. :)

No, the Pope is never right IMO.........................

Kick im up the a$$ Dougal, you do it this time.....OK?

My mother had a horse quirk, I was terrified into behaving. I never got hit with it.......

My mother used the back of a wooden hair brush; and it hurt to sit down afterward, b/c i had bruises on my butt.My brother got me into trouble b/c he told me to do stuff that I was too young to understand that I shouldn't do.

I don't  think  it's really  necessary  to hit a child,  I never hit mine. A raised  voice and a warning  was usually  enough.

After some  of the stories  that have come out about priests  and the way they treated children, I wouldn't  take a lot of notice of what he says  on that subject.  But then I'm  not a Catholic  either.

Through much research and scientific study, we in civilized societies are learning that it is better not to hit children. It's hard for many to disband the idea that spanking a kid is part of good discipline, and also the right thing to do. Some religious viewpoints believe in physical punishment. Now we know it hurts the brain and child development in some way. It's hard for popes to change after so many centuries of doing things a certain way. We pray God will speak to the pope, as he usually does, for change on this topic. And in the mean time, we pray for him and his forthcoming wisdom.

When you hit a kid, you teach him to hit his siblings, and his  kids and possibly his wife too. Same goes for hitting a little girl and her kids and husband.

The pope is not an expert on raising children.

The Book of Proverbs in the Bible has several references to child discipline and is the origin of the saying 'spare the rod and spoil the child'. So that's ok then, isn't it?

well that's part of the problem. The Holy Bible said 'spare the rod and spoil the child'. And we all know that's got to be true and right. Thus thousand of children or humans, under 18 continue to suffer and be abused in the name of not spoiling the child. Lots, developing mental illness and some killer instincts. Most serial killers got plenty of abuse and beatings from parents and care givers. Even though we love Proverbs and the Bible, we can take advantage of new technologies for teaching and raising children. I personally would love to see: every time a grown-up beats a kids, another grown would appear on the scene, three times taller than the original adult, and beat the 1st adult in the same manner with the same tool (belt, extension card, coat hanger etc.) That might help some grown ups see how the beaten kid feels.

Most kids learn from painful experiences. If they don't they probably end up as democrats. Not learning to solve problems , blaming others for their problems. The others that do, live productful lives. For the most part.

Better they grow up as democrats rather than republicans who are often creationists, home schoolers, anti-vaccination and who are crazy religious and anti-science.
