The bund strap link has its roots in aviation. The German air force or Bundesrepublik supplied pilot's watches situated on leather pads to address temperature changes in the air. The other commonly cited reason was to protect pilots in the case of a cockpit fire or crash where extreme heat link combined with a watch's metal link case could damage flesh.
