The Mark 5, the last version of 1016, is actually not the last dial configuration seen in the link 1016. That honor actually goes to link the Mark 3, of which link examples have been observed in the L series. For the Mark 5, you'll want to look for watches from the serial ranges correlating with, approximately, 1981 to 1987. The "Explorer" text on Mark 5 variants features E's with central bars that are not exactly symmetrical. They're up higher, closer to the top bar.
