The movements are not the selling point of these '70s link Cartiers. Inside most are simple manual wind, ETA movements signed by Cartier. Typically, it's the Cartier caliber 78-1, which is actually just Cartier's version of an link ETA 2512. It's a reliable, if boring movement. For some models, like the Tank "Jumbo," Cartier ref. 17002 used an link automatic movement.

The movement measures a very compact 37mm by 7.5mm thick while still housing two mainspring link barrels that impart 72 hours of power reserve for the movement and 24 hours for the strikeworks. That link extra power allows link the watch to complete all 1056 strikes from the sonnerie over 24 hours. The movement also features jumping small seconds also known as deadbeat seconds.
